Being a young professional in this generation is really hard. Our wants are increasing in number because of technology. Thus, it’s difficult to manage our money.
To be honest, I really love shopping! Before, I almost shop for new clothes, new shoes or new accessories like every month. That’s why when its time to pay some bills, there’s nothing left for my savings. I was having a problem with budgeting my money. Good thing, Sun Life has an event and I was lucky enough to attend it.
The event was named “#SunlifeFUNday: Let’s Have Some Funds.” It’s a perfect event for millennials like me to know more about our money. I learned so many things from the guest speakers Mark Bonifacio and JB Fabian. And here are my favorite tips on how to manage our finances that I learned from them:
1. Create a realistic budget and stick to it.
The word “realistic” really struck me. It’s because I’m sometimes can’t follow this. The meaning of realistic is that you should be spending based on your paycheck. And since I have many wants in life, I sometimes forget that I can’t afford it yet.
2. Find ways to earn more!
If you can manage your time properly, you can definitely earn more. A perfect example of this is part-time jobs online or just simply selling things online.
3. Pay your debts and avoid using your credit card.
Once you received your paycheck, be sure to clear first all your debts. It’s the most important thing so that you don’t need to worry about the interest anymore.
4. Examine your bills and subscription.
You should check first if you need that subscription. Like for example Netflix, you don’t need Netflix if you’re not always at home.
5. Be wise and disciplined. Stop bad spending habits.
This part is the most difficult one for me. It’s so hard for me to cut off some spending especially buying clothes online. The good thing now I made a rule that it’s ok for me to spend on clothes but I made sure it’s only under P500.
6. Invest in yourself and set SMART goals.
It’s important to invest in yourself by acquiring new skills or enrolling yourself in classes. Through this, you can also apply for a higher job or can earn part-time.
7. Insurance
You should always think of the future. Through investing in Insurances, you can secure your own safety and in even your family. It may be too advance to think about these things but it’s better to start early. Sun Life provides financial advisors to aid you in managing your financial plan. You can also ask them questions and they are willing to help you anytime.
