Amidst Covid-19, Davao City’s Honesty Jeepney was initiated

April 22, 2020

Have you heard about the famous Honesty Coffee Shop in Batanes? It is actually known for its self-service method. Customers just get what they need and trusting that they do the right thing and pay right. They even collect their change by just getting it from the pool of money. Cool, right?

Last March 24, a video went viral on the internet, which showed another kind of honesty system. A jeepney driver from Davao City initiated a “Honesty Jeepney”. It was to make sure passengers are practicing social distancing protocols. Containers were been strategically placed in between seats. Surprisingly, the containers used was a repurposed Shell Rimula engine oil plastic canisters. In the video, a passenger was also heard jokingly saying, “Bawal kumupit [Stealing is not allowed.].”

It was a smart move because it can help minimized the contact of between passengers. The honesty system in that jeep had been useful in ensuring that people were safe from coronavirus infection. Because of that, there were only 6 to 10 passengers allowed inside the jeepney.

The owner of the viral video was Jefferson Camasin. He said that the driver wants to ensure his passengers safety even though his profit will be at risk.”  Camasin and his fellow passengers praised the driver and supported the jeepney’s honesty system by paying the correct fare. Some of them even gave tips, knowing how difficult it was to earn a living that time when jeepney drivers can only ferry a few passengers at a time. Jeepneys were still able to do their usual business in Davao City before an ECQ prevented them from operating last April 4.
